M4B programme opens for SMEs in sensors and instrumentation

M4B applications now open

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has officially opened its M4B programme to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focused on developing innovative sensors, instrumentation and measurement systems. This initiative offers businesses up to 20 days of specialist measurement science and engineering expertise at no cost.

The extension of the M4B programme is designed to support SMEs in the characterisation, development and verification of new concepts, making it easier for them to bring their products to market.

Key areas of assistance provided through the programme include:

  • Investigating the feasibility of new, innovative product ideas and services.
  • Accessing research and development to enhance the functionality of cutting-edge products and advance them along the product development pathway.
  • Validating product and process performances, enabling innovative offerings to enter the market backed by credible, trusted data, thereby attracting more investors.
  • Ensuring that standards and specifications are met to help influence industry norms, making room for disruptive products.
  • Encouraging rapid failure of embryonic ideas that may be flawed, allowing businesses to pivot quickly.

The M4B programme is specifically aimed at SMEs producing products or services that are currently in the pre-market stage. Additionally, funding is available for complex projects or challenges that may require specialised support not typically offered by commercial test laboratories or other service providers.

For businesses in different sectors interested in future participation, there is an option to register interest. Meanwhile, companies with existing products or services looking for support are encouraged to explore the Innovate UK Analysis for Innovators programme.
