BSI calls for input on nuclear power plant alarm system standard

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is seeking review and comments on the new BS EN IEC 62241 standard, a draft standard for alarm functions and presentation in nuclear power plant control rooms.

The draft document outlines functional requirements for alarm systems in the main control rooms of nuclear power plants. It aims to establish definitions of terms used for alarm functions, human factors requirements and design guidelines for alarm presentation.

The standard covers various aspects of alarm functions, including selection and definition of original alarm signals, alarm signal processing, alarm display processing and use of associated display devices.

BS EN IEC 62241 seeks to provide guidance on reducing problems experienced in the past, such as omission of important alarms, delays in detecting critical alarms, increased workload affecting operational activities, inattention to frequently activated ‘nuisance alarms’ and confusion related to alarm relationships and importance.

Interested parties can access the draft and leave comments by visiting the BSI Standards Development website at http://standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com/projects/2025-00199.

The deadline for submitting comments is 5 March 2025
