Make UK calls for effective regulation to boost UK manufacturing

Make UK has released a new report highlighting the need for effective regulation to support the growth and competitiveness of UK manufacturing. The report – UK Manufacturing: The Case for Effective Regulation – addresses the turbulent regulatory landscape that manufacturers have faced over the past decade.

The report acknowledges that manufacturers have had to adapt quickly to various expected and unexpected circumstances, including Brexit, COVID-19 pandemic and the push towards net zero emissions. It also recognises the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements, changes in UK-EU trade rules and global supply chain disruptions.

In the report, Make UK emphasises the crucial role that regulations play in guiding businesses and ensuring consistency. The report notes that major trading economies such as the EU, USA, India, and China are advancing ambitious regulatory agendas in areas such as AI, energy and industrial decarbonisation, highlighting the need for the UK to be prepared to respond effectively.

The report proposes a new approach to how regulations are devised, implemented, and reviewed, guided by clear principles. Make UK argues that by applying this approach to both existing and new regulations, the government can create rules that work for business growth, protect workers’ and consumers’ rights and benefit the environment.

“In an increasingly complex global landscape, effective regulation is vital for the success of UK manufacturing,” said Stephen Phipson, Make UK’s CEO, “Our report outlines a principle-led approach that can help create a regulatory environment that fosters innovation, growth, and competitiveness while maintaining high standards.”
