New gas analyser system from TWI

TWI Global has commissioned a new gas analyser system, the Bruker G8 Galileo – the first of its kind in the UK to feature both a mass spectrometer and external infrared furnace.

Developed to deliver high-precision measurement of hydrogen content and trapping in metallic materials, the system supports pioneering research into hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms and hydrogen–material interactions.

This enhanced capability allows TWI to provide deeper insights into hydrogen behaviour, both at the laboratory level and in applied engineering environments.

By combining advanced nondispersive infrared, thermal conductivity detector and mass spectrometry technologies, the Bruker G8 Galileo achieves sub-ppm to ppb level detection with high analytical precision. The system enables direct, unaltered gas measurement for reliable and reproducible results, supported bysSmart molecule sequence technology that provides real-time gas analysis.

Precise temperature monitoring is maintained through FusionControl, ensuring stable sample conditions, while new processes for sample loading, cleaning and calibration ensure both efficiency and accuracy.

TWI’s industrial member companies are already making use of the service, and the organisation is actively seeking further enquiries from businesses seeking to address their hydrogen-related research and production challenges.
