< Previous30 BMTA COUNCIL MEMBER PROFILE MATTHEW GYPPS UK Technical Manager, Trescal Our feature on our BMTA Council members gives a little more insight into the people behind BMTA. We ask why did they become BMTA Council members and what do they believe are the benefits to being a member of the Association? In this issue we talk to Matt Gypps, UK Technical Manager, Trescal. Matt maintains and develops all technical capabilities and accredited services for the company. He monitors and improves industrial efficiency through training innovation and investment. We asked Matt to tell us about himself. Can you briefly describe your job, Matt? MG – I manage the UK technical team of developers and metrology experts. We operate within the Trescal Technical network which is comprised of Regional Technical Managers in the US, Europe and APAC and Country Technical Managers within these regions. Not only do we maintain the current processes, systems and UKAS scope of accreditation but we share best practice and innovation within the technical organisation and, where appropriate, introduce these to the UK. Each year I am responsible for an investment budget of more than £1million which we use to enhance our technical capability and scope of accreditation. This can be an investment in new test equipment, software development for automation or the introduction of cobots to automate manual processes. It’s great to be part of a large network so that we can share ideas and support each other. And how long have you been working in your field? MG - I’ve been working in the industry since I left school, more than 30 years ago. How did you get to where you are? What was your career journey? MG - I started as an apprentice with Microwave Systems Ltd (MSL) covering calibration and repair activities. Once qualified, I worked in a number of different technical roles as the company transitioned to be part of the Instrument Services and Dowding & Mills Calibration groups. bmta.co.uk31 I then moved into EMC equipment sales, QHSE and team leader roles prior to becoming Engineering Manager. Following an acquisition by Trescal in 2010, I moved to branch manager roles before helping to establish a UK technical team as part of the worldwide Trescal technical structure. I have been UK Technical Manager since 2017. Why do you do what you do? What gets you up in the morning? MG - My day-to-day duties vary, and most often never keep to a fixed agenda. While we have our development plans and audit schedules, my team also has to react to incoming customer and technical needs, so you never know what to expect. It’s that variation in our work and the satisfaction of resolving issues for others which motivates us daily. What do you think is your biggest accomplishment in your career? MG - I’m lucky to have been involved in a number of interesting and successful projects so that’s a hard question! I’m probably most proud of the successful transition to ISO17025:2017. Trescal has one of the UK’s largest UKAS scopes of accreditation so there was a lot at risk. Working with our QHSE team, not only did we have to train all the UK staff on the new features of the standard, such as decision rules, but we had to modify our systems and certification to meet the new standard in a relatively short timeframe. I am pleased to say that the project was completed successfully and ahead of target. How long has your company been a member of BMTA? MG - Trescal has been a member of the BMTA since 2013. Why did you join BMTA? MG - To be part of a UK organisation that best serves the UK test and measurement industry. What value do you receive as a member of BMTA? MG - The knowledge and insight into the UK market and the support of a joined-up organisation to challenge government bodies and policies that affect our market, provides a huge value. You’re a member of the BMTA Council. Why did you join the Council? MG - I joined the BMTA Council in 2017 after one of my colleagues stepped down due to retirement. It’s been a great way to see first-hand what the BMTA can do and also to increase my personal network. What else can you tell us about yourself? MG - Outside of work my main interest is time with my family. Travelling with work (in a normal year!) means I’m away from home a lot, so it’s good to spend as much time as I can at home during the weekends. Aside from that, my other interests include DIY, DJing and power kiting. bmta.co.uk32 MEMBER NOTICES MEASUREMENT STRATEGY - MMN EVENT Tue, 22nd Nov 2022 at 15:30 An MMN event in the series of talks about measurement strategy within manufacturing. Hear from experts in this field who will discuss approaches to this challenge and introduce techniques and technologies that are available or becoming available to make measurements in hostile environments. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/harsh-environment-tickets-344143330967 BATTERY TECHNOLOGY - MMN EVENT Tue, 14th Feb 2023 at 15:30 The increasing use of electrification in transport and the need to store energy from renewable energy sources such as solar cells leads to challenges to provide suitable battery storage. These batteries need to operate for a long time, reliably and within stated performance criteria. New battery manufacturers are emerging as is a need for better regulation of standards, more efficient means of testing cells and considerations for material reuse at the end of a battery’s life. Hear from people involved in these topics about what is currently being done and what the challenges are for the future. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/battery-technology-tickets-399958254907 DEVELOPMENTS AND INNOVATION IN ADVANCED MANUFACTURING - MMN EVENT Tue, 11th Oct 2023 at 18:00 The next NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network event ‘Developments and Innovation in Advanced Manufacturing’ on 11th October will present details about current research into new technologies which could benefit your business in the future.
