We ask why did they become BMTA Council members and what do they believe are the benefits to being a member of the Association? In this issue we talk to Dr David Gurden-Williams - BSc (Jt Hons) Biochemistry / Chemistry, PhD Chemistry, Chartered Scientist, Product Steward Specialist at 3M United Kingdom PLC. David’s current role covers regulatory compliance for raw materials and products bought and sold by 3M UK and Ireland. This involves knowledge and application of regulations governing different types of products, including medical devices, PPE, biocides, detergents, cosmetics and F-gas for consumer and industrial users. David is the country lead for REACH regulations covering the requirements to register under the recently established UK REACH framework. Prior to this David was a Test Laboratory Supervisor at 3M United Kingdom Plc for their Personal Safety Divison, ISO17025:2017 accredited test lab on the Aycliffe Site. This included involvement in the BSI committee for respiratory protection and a role as CEN convenor for the respiratory test methods working group. David’s BMTA Council membership contributions have been associated with input into council meetings to assist with the strategic direction setting of the association. His support for the organisation also extends to attendance and promotion of BMTA events, from which his company has benefitted from increased knowledge of how measurement and testing best practices assist their business. Although he no longer works in a laboratory environment, his experience, coupled with current regulatory knowledge, provides a different viewpoint to the Council. We asked David to tell us about himself.bmta.co.uk 31 Can you briefly describe your job, David? DGW – Product governance, approval and regulatory requirements. Ensuring that products coming to 3M UK and Ireland comply with the law including ensuring product registrations, marking and certifications are correct. Ensuring that any chemicals involved are not restricted and that they have the correct authorisation. And how long have you been working in this role? DGW – Around 18 months in my current role. How did you get to where you are? What was your career journey? DGW - BSc, PhD, followed by multiple laboratory-based roles covering quality, analytical, R&D and general testing, before moving into a regulatory role. As 3M is a multinational company with many sites in the UK, this has allowed me to move from 3M Gorseinon to the Bracknell office before working at 3M Aycliffe. What do you think is your biggest accomplishment in your career? DGW - Tech Forum Chair for UK and Ireland - an organised annual national tech event. Why do you do what you do? What gets you up in the morning? DGW - To do a good job, keep the company compliant and check compliance for materials that go into products made by 3M. This facilitates the continued sale of products and business opportunities where regulations may appear restrictive. How long has your company been a member of BMTA? DGW - 14 years. Why did you join BMTA? DGW - To get an understanding of national activities for testing and calibration labs. Also, to learn more about accreditation activities and advice. What value do you receive as a member of BMTA? DGW - I receive a greater knowledge and understanding of the world of metrology, and it provides a source for where to find training courses. It also gives me knowledge on accreditation topics and connections to UKAS, NPL, OPSS and government. You’re a member of the BMTA Council. Why did you join the Council? DGW - I joined in 2012 as a request for representation from larger organisations. This allowed me to gain more insight into accreditation and laboratory matters. What else can you tell us about yourself? DGW - I like to exercise - in particular, I enjoy running and cycling. I’m also an ex-squash player. I also enjoy cooking and fermentation (beer and bread-making). I live with my wife and two daughters (ages 6 and 1.5 years), and they keep me busy.bmta.co.uk BMTA MEMBER COMPANY PROFILE MARKES INTERNATIONAL Markes International was founded in 1997 to develop advanced thermal desorption (TD) sample preparation technologies, which enhance the analysis of trace volatile and semi- volatile organic compounds by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Markes began as a family-owned company in south Wales and has since grown to become a global market leader in TD. Markes joined the Schauenburg Group in 2012 and established Schauenburg Analytics as a parent company. At this point, Markes had acquired time-of-flight (TOF) technology and had commercialised a bench-top TOF mass spectrometer (TOF MS). Becoming part of Schauenburg enabled Markes to cement the partnership between the measurement (TOF MS) and sample preparation (TD) sides of the business. In 2016, the expanding measurement and separations part of the business was crystallised into Markes’ sister company SepSolve under the umbrella of Schauenburg Analytics. The defining philosophy and purpose of Schauenburg Analytics is to serve our customers by continually advancing technical innovation and by providing an unmatched level of expert application and technical support to users. Markes’ and SepSolve’s products and services are used worldwide for a range of applications such as environmental monitoring, homeland security, analysis of consumer products, foods and beverages. In addition to these well-established fields, their systems are also widely used in advanced research, such as breath sampling for disease diagnosis and investigations into chemical ecology. To enhance both companies’ services, Schauenburg Analytics has also recently launched the Schauenburg Analytics Academy, which is a training and technical services portal where customers can access expert help when needed. Markes derives great value from being a member of the BMTA, from representing the Association on BSI committees through to networking opportunities. Membership also enables Markes to keep up to date with industry news and trends. https://markes.com/ 32MEMBER NOTICES bmta.co.uk 33 GLOBAL FLOW MEASUREMENT WORKSHOP 25-27 October 2022 P&J LIVE, ABERDEEN https://www.tuvsud.com/en-gb/events/global-flow-measurement-workshop/technical- programme In today’s economic climate, if companies are not innovating then they quickly become outdated, as can be seen from recent diversifications of some majors into cleaner fuels.
