DBT launches review of UK machinery safety legislation – have your say

Harvest

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has launched a major review of the UK’s machinery safety legislation and is inviting input from BMTA members and other stakeholders across the sector.

The BMTA urges members to actively participate and ensure the voice of our sector is heard.

The review comes as the EU introduces a new Machinery Regulation (2023/1230) taking effect from January 2027, which will automatically apply in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework.

DBT is considering the UK’s regulatory approach for machinery in Great Britain. Currently, the UK’s Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 are derived from the original EU Machinery Directive. These regulations cover a wide range of products, from industrial and agricultural machinery to consumer goods such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers.

As part of its review, DBT is calling for evidence to inform potential reforms of the UK’s machinery regulatory framework. This includes assessing the impact of adopting similar regulations in Great Britain as those applied in Northern Ireland and the EU and considering the possibility of continuing CE mark recognition for machinery.

This process aims to capture views on how reforms could affect UK businesses and consumers, and explore opportunities to reduce administrative costs and burdens on business.

We strongly urge all BMTA members, including manufacturers, importers, and those involved in regulatory affairs, compliance, product safety or supply chain management, to take part in this important consultation.

You can respond to the call for evidence online here. The deadline for submissions is Monday, 20 October 2025.

DBT is also organising a series of stakeholder roundtables in Edinburgh, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham (August), and London (October), with international sessions to follow in September. To register for a roundtable, please use this form by Thursday, 7 August. (Please note, spaces are limited to one representative per organisation and details will be sent upon confirmation).
