The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Advanced Manufacturing has appointed Fernando Castro as its new chair.
Castro is Principal Scientist and Department Head of Science at NPL. A recognised expert in metrology, he advises governments and R&D agencies internationally and has written key strategic documents shaping both UK and European metrology.
He previously served as global chair of VAMAS, where he led pre-standards research across 15 technical areas involving more than 300 organisations in 40 countries. Castro has delivered more than 90 invited talks in 25 countries, is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and IOM3, and is visiting professor at the University of Surrey. He also served as vice-chair for the EMN’s section on Advanced Materials.
The EMN for Advanced Manufacturing develops and refines metrology methods to ensure quality standards for manufacturing processes and products. This work helps European industries meet stringent high-precision requirements across the entire manufacturing chain, from advanced materials and smart systems to final components and products.
“I am honoured to take on the role of chair of the European Metrology Network on Advanced Manufacturing,” Castro said, “Manufacturing is vital for Europe’s competitiveness, and metrology plays a critical role in providing the confidence needed to accelerate innovation, to ensure high quality manufacturing and to allow governments to regulate effectively, safeguarding both the environment and public health.”
