NPL updates metrology vision

NPL updates metrology vision

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has published a new perspective on its 2020 Technology and Measurement Foresighting report.

The update builds on NPL’s 2020 Technology and Measurement Foresighting report and reviews how global measurement priorities are changing to keep pace with accelerating demands.

Three major trends will define the future of measurement science, according to the NPL. These include supporting a digitally enabled global measurement infrastructure, improving understanding of complex systems and giving confidence in decision making for industry, scientific research and society.

Richard Brown, NPL’s Head of Metrology said, “NPL is developing its views on the future of metrology and the evolving role of the NMI [National Metrology Institute], so we can effectively support industry, scientific research and society. More broadly all researchers with a “metrology mindset” and a toolbox of approaches will have the skills and preparedness to innovate and demonstrate the validity of their conclusions.”

NPL Fellow Josephine Bunch added that that NMIs will be “at the forefront of helping to unravel complex systems” and that agile thinking and measurement innovation will equip researchers to confidently tackle future scenarios.
